I have been building and restoring guitars for the past 14 years, but it’s been a lifelong quest to better understand what makes a guitar special, or how traditional approaches to guitar design might be improved upon. Why does one guitar feel amazing compared to another made to the same specifications? Why are certain timbers or construction methods more commonly used than others, and do they still represent the best approach given the knowledge and materials we have available to us today?

I have built many instruments over the years, from acoustic guitars to electrics, from baritones to basses. But for me, the deepest insights into guitar have come from my years of repair and restoration work. It is through this work that I have come to understand not only why things were traditionally done the way they were, but also where new or alternate approached might be taken.
